London’s Side Street Salon (www.sidestreetsalon.ca,
located just off Richmond Row in London Ontario) is busy with brides,
bridesmaids and stylists. “This is when the wedding day really begins,” says
Suke Mestanovski, owner. The Side Street team works together, using tools of the
trade - bobbypins, curling irons, cappuccino - to start the day off on the right
(manicured) foot. So after having designed the beauty behind countless weddings,
Side Street had a few tips of their own to share with brides who want to achieve
diva status on their wedding day.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING “Book your bridal party for
hair, make-up and aesthetics as soon as you can,” says Side Street. These
services book up fast and you don’t want to end up on a waiting list, hoping for
a cancellation.
START EARLY “If you’re having photos done before
the ceremony, your photographer might need you as early as two hours before the
wedding - dressed and ready to go!” At Side Street Salon, they’ve opened as
early as 6 a.m. for a wedding party.
STRIKE
A POSE At Side Street Salon, consultations with digital photos are considered an
absolute must. This means you’ll get to try your ‘do’ on for size, and snap a
shot of it to make sure you and your stylist don’t get confused on the wedding
day. “Consultations usually allow the bride or her bridal party to try different
styles out to see which suits them and their gowns best.”
THINK BIG If you don’t just want a ‘do’ for a
day, plan a totally new look. “A bridal consultation can help her think about
all her options - cut, style, colour, scalp and skin...”
HAIR PIECES & EXTENSIONS Gone are the days when
you had to grow your hair to get a long luxurious look. “We can match your hair
colour and type and order clipped-in hair pieces for you.” Suke likes this
option for brides who want long flowing hair or a full updo. Permanent hair
extensions are popular because there is no messy or abrasive glue bonds. “We use
aluminum bonds that are very durable and versatile.”
PERFECT TIMING Time your hair and/or make-up
consultation for the day of your gown fitting to get a real preview of your
inner diva!
TESTING, TESTING Makeup consultations can also
help save the day. “Brides are going more glamorous with false eyelashes and
things like that... You’ll want to try those ahead of time to get used to them,
but they really make a bride’s eyes pop.”
SCRUB
IN “Brides who have a gown that shows their back, shoulders or arms often use a
body scrub treatment to exfoliate and soften the skin,” Suke says. His and her
manicures can also help prepare you for shaking hands with hundreds of guests.
DOWN TIME Before the wedding day, think about
scheduling in some down time to relax. A hot rock release, healing facials, and
other spa treatments can do wonders for the body, soul and skin.
TREAT THE GIRLS Treat the girls in your wedding
party to salon gift certificates that will cover their hair and make-up
expenses.
